EU, ASEAN Urge US–Iran for Peace Deal Over Hormuz Risks
According to reports, the two regional blocs welcomed a recently established ceasefire between Washington and Tehran, which was facilitated through mediation efforts by Pakistan.
They reiterated their commitment to international maritime rules and the protection of global shipping lanes.
In their joint statement following a ministerial meeting held in Brunei, both sides highlighted “importance of upholding freedom of navigation in and overflight above straits used for international navigation, in accordance with international law, as reflected in the 1982 UNCLOS.”
They also expressed “deep concern over any discriminatory or unilateral measures that may impede or obstruct vessels passing through the Strait of Hormuz, or any straits used for international navigation,” warning against actions that could disrupt global trade routes.
The Strait of Hormuz has remained under pressure amid the continuing US–Iran conflict, now in its second month, with the situation already affecting global energy markets and hitting Asian economies particularly hard.
The two blocs further called for the restoration of safe and uninterrupted maritime and air transit through the strategic waterway. They urged all parties to support the ceasefire’s implementation by avoiding escalation, exercising restraint, and refraining from any steps that could worsen tensions. They stated that parties should “urged all parties involved to maintain conducive conditions for the full and effective implementation of the ceasefire, by exercising utmost restraint, ceasing all hostilities, and avoiding any acts that may aggravate the situation.”
