EU, ASEAN Call for Peaceful Resolution to WAR on Iran
In a joint statement issued after their 25th ministerial meeting in Brunei’s capital, both blocs welcomed the ceasefire brokered by Pakistan and stressed the need to maintain safe maritime operations, particularly through the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz.
They reaffirmed their commitment to international law governing navigation, highlighting the “importance of upholding freedom of navigation in and overflight above straits used for international navigation, in accordance with international law, as reflected in the 1982 UNCLOS.”
The statement also voiced “deep concern over any discriminatory or unilateral measures that may impede or obstruct vessels passing through the Strait of Hormuz, or any straits used for international navigation,” reflecting worries over disruptions affecting global trade routes.
With the conflict entering its second month, the continued closure of key maritime passages has had significant repercussions on global energy flows, particularly impacting Asian economies.
The EU and ASEAN urged all sides to ensure the ceasefire holds by avoiding escalation and maintaining restraint. They called for “the restoration of the safe, unimpeded, and continuous transit passage of vessels and aircraft in the Strait of Hormuz,” while encouraging conditions that support ongoing diplomatic engagement.
The ceasefire, initially secured on April 8 through Pakistani mediation and later extended, remains in effect, though tensions persist.
Reinforcing their broader stance, both groups emphasized the need for lasting peace and stability across the Middle East, calling for a “complete and immediate cessation of hostilities across all fronts in the Middle East.”
